Mid-Term Practice and Paragraphs

Hello everybody,

Today I'd like you to begin by completing this quiz. Using your knowledge about ASEAN, prepositions of location, (and some guesswork), complete this quiz. Your answers at the end will add together to make a question for the M4 SEEK Core Exam. That's right- if you finish this activity, you will know a question on next week's mid-term!

In your mid-term exams, you will have to write at least two paragraphs. A good way to remember making a paragraph is to think of a burger:

Without a top or bottom bun, the burger falls apart. If there are no supporting sentences or details in the middle, it'll be a pretty boring burger!

Another way to remember paragraph writing is with traffic lights:

Here is a paragraph which shows how to make a paragraph in this way:

Topic Sentences

You should begin your paragraph with an interesting, clear topic sentence. Here is an interactive game about topic sentences. Read the paragraph, and choose the best topic sentence to introduce the main ideas of the paragraph.

Supporting Sentences

These give more information about the topic sentence, or give reasons why you think the topic sentence is true.
In this paragraph, the supporting sentences are in bold.
Remember, this is the 'meat' in your burger- supporting sentences should be the biggest part of your paragraph.

Concluding Sentences

You must finish your paragraph with a concluding sentence. It is similar to the "bun" that started your paragraph, but do not write exactly the same sentence again. Remember, a concluding sentence should NOT include new information. You should have said it already!

Finally, here is an interactive paragraph activity from the BBC.

This activity is meant for students living in England, so don't worry if it is difficult! It asks about topic sentences, connectives (words that connect different ideas in a paragraph: "Similarly,...", "However,..."), and summing up (i.e. the concluding sentence).

Take your time, and read carefully. If you have earphones, you can plug them in to listen to the instructions.

Finished!

Congratulations, that was a lot of hard work! Here are some English games that you can play for fun:
